BARBIE IN REVIEW - KINDA FUNNY (2023)
Creating an intro for Kinda Funny's Barbie In Review gave a unique opportunity to play around with a far more vibrant colour palette than most movie franchises would allow, and to figure out the best way of combining the recognizable Barbie aesthetic with Kinda Funny.
I came across a Barbie play set from the 80s that looked remarkably like Kinda Funny's own studio. It was hugely beneficial in helping me figure out what adapting a toy version of their podcast set would look like. I was able to take the actual pieces of a real set, photos of actual dolls I could Frankenstein into resembling the podcast crew, along with assets I photographed in real life to create this fake play set. Every asset physically existing in some form was integral to giving it a sense of scale and uniformity.
I then was able to draw some rough depth maps of the fake dolls to help give a faux 3D effect, and mimic the movements you'd often see in classic toy commercials.
This was easily some of the most fun I've had working on an intro.
